You've got mail bookstore

Touchstones are the parts of movies, books or songs that strike a chord in our lives to which we can relate. This is why we have favorites.

My favorite movie is You’ve Got Mail because I can relate to Kathleen Kelly in so many ways.

  • She has a little bookstore where the people have shopped for years. They loved her mother and the way she entered into the lives of her customers. (My parents had a drug store where they entered into the lives of their customers with compassion and care.)
  • She love books and writing. (I love books and writing!)
  • She was fascinated by the ability to connect with people on the internet she had never met in person. (I marvel at this as well.)

These are just a few of my favorite parts. 🙂

This leads to my next question…

Question #9 – What is your hobby and how did you learn to do it?

Hobbies are a great way to spend free time doing something you really love. Some people are even able to make a living with their hobby full-time. I know I would love to! Alas, the pay for me has always been more about the reward I get doing it than from any money I might receive. But hey, I’d never refuse the offer!
I love to write so I spend the majority of my day doing so. And when I’m not writing, I’m thinking about what I’ll write next. 🙂 Even now I’m at the hair salon and instead of reading the latest magazine, I’m writing this post because I can! 🙂

You can learn a lot about someone just by discovering their hobbies.

My grandmother loved to sew, and she was good at it. She taught herself when she was a young girl. Amazingly, she never needed a pattern which proves it was truly a gift. But she didn’t think it was such a big deal because it came so easily to her. Hobbies are like that. We tend to excel at those things we love doing. Or maybe it’s because we love doing it, so we practice and develop a skill for it quicker. At any rate, hobbies are a great question to ask your older relatives. And I have a sneaking suspicion you’ll see a sparkle come to their eyes as they answer you!

Mimeograph Memories

I am so close to publishing my book I can smell the ink on the page. I remember as a child loving the smell of mimeograph work sheets at my elementary school. It’s sad to think children today will never know what I’m talking about. This leads me to the reason I’ve written my grandmother’s story. For as long as I can remember, my mom has shared much of it with me, with all of our family. By God’s grace I’ve finally captured it in written form and will soon be able to share it with you.

My mom is a great historian. She has worked tirelessly for years on our family genealogy.  In fact, she’s currently working on the timeline for the sequel to Through The Eyes Of Grace. She is an amazing inspiration to me, and one of the main reasons I’ve been compelled to share this story with you. If it weren’t for her I would have nothing to share. Like the forgotten smell of ink on white paper.

What stories are in your family of which you’ve yet to hear? It is your story and deserves to be handed down to the next generation. Do you have someone in your family like my mom?
